Answer

Configuring SMTP is outside of the scope of your Abila M&S agreement. The following solution has been provided as a courtesy to our Fund Accounting customers. Please contact your Abila Business Partner or your local IT consultant for assistance in maintaining or troubleshooting your SMTP settings.

To Setup SMTP Email in MIP Fund Accounting:

Go to Organization>Organization Information>SMTP Email. You may want to contact your IT person for the settings but below will be some general information. Settings for if you are hosted through portal.mip.com can be found here.

Server:

On-Premise Mail Server- Typically you will use the name of the mail server or the IP address for that server.

Off-Premise Mail Servers- Typically smtp.yourmailprovider.com (ex. smtp.office365.com, smtp.gmail.com)

Port:

Typically, the generic port used if you are using an on-premise mail server or even many off-premise hosted mail servers is 25

In some instances, like Office 365, you would use port 587 instead

Enable SMTP over Transport Layer Security (STARTTLS): Is typically not required unless you are using an off-premise/hosted mail server and even then, it is not always required.

Use Custom Credentials: This is almost never required for on-premise mail servers but sometimes can be. The credentials must match what you would use to log into the global admin email account elsewhere. This cannot be each individual user’s account since it is a global setting. Example: If Jack puts in his email address jack@test.com and Jill tries to email from her email jill@test.com, it will not work unless Jack has given Jill ‘send as’ permissions to his email account. This is outlined for Office 365 in KB article 18201.

Test SMTP Connection:

  1. The From field should be an email address inside your email domain. If the only email that works in this field is the Custom Credentials email, you will need to review the previous step (4).

  2. The To field will allow you to send a test to an individual email. You can choose someone in the organization but may receive an error if you try sending to someone outside your organizational domain. This may be because your computer’s IP address has to be whitelisted in the email server to send emails outside the domain.

Note: Be sure to test sending emails from the machine that needs to send them frequently.
